Indianapolis, Ind. – The Cardinal Stritch University women’s soccer team was looking to pick up one win in the Marian Classic. Stritch battled tough but found themselves on the short end, as they fell to Davenport University (Mich.) 2-1.
Davenport University (Mich.) broke onto the scoreboard first. The Panthers scored on a goal by Ashley Deruiter (Kentwood, Mich.). She floated the ball over Heather McGlothin (Bloomington, Ind.) head from 35 yards out putting Davenport University (Mich.) up 1-0.
The lead to did not last long for the Panthers as the Wolves had an answer less than a minute later. Stritch tied the game at 1-1, after Brenda Hernandez (Milwaukee, Wis.) found Lourdes Gil (Milwaukee, Wis.) on the far left post and Gil put the ball in the back of the net.
The game would stay tied until the 79th minute when Deruiter beat McGlothin for her second goal of the game. Deruiter connected on another long shot, this time from 25 yards out giving the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
The Wolves would not threaten to score again as they fell 2-1 to the Panthers. Stritch found themselves outside by the Panthers 14-4. With the loss the Wolves fall to 1-3 on the season. They return to action on Saturday September 11 when they travel to La Crosse, Wisconsin to take on Viterbo University. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
