Alyssa Ahmad's nine kills led the Wolves to a sweep of Huntington University Friday night
Milwaukee, Wis. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves women’s volleyball team continued their recent surge on Friday night by sweeping the Huntington University Foresters, 3-0.
The Wolves cruised through game one by winning 25-15. However, they would have to rely on resilience and never-say-die attitude to pull off captivating wins in games two and three.
In game two, Stritch went down a quick 3-0 and stayed down for most of the second set. It wasn’t until the scoreboard read 18-14 in favor of the Foresters that the Wolves suddenly caught momentum. Back-to-back kills by Alyssa Ahmad (St. Francis, Wis.) and Shannon Petrack (Winneconne, Wis.) suddenly had the Wolves down two points at 18-16.
The Foresters would get a kill by Kayee Searles (Van Buren, Ind.), but Stritch would respond with a point off of a service error HU and then register kills by Jessica Shaver (West Allis, Wis.), Katlyn Britton (Westby, Wis.), and Victoria Pflibsen (Manville, Ill.). Add in an attack error by Huntington’s Denise Lehman (Monroe, Ind.) and the suddenly the Wolves found themselves in control of the set at 21-19.
The Wolves would never look back, claiming the second set 25-22 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
The final set of the match would have Stritch and Huntington trading points until the Foresters put eight unanswered points on the board to go up 19-11. Despite being down, the Wolves would continue to battle, going on an 8-2 scoring run to close the gap to 21-19. Stritch would complete the comeback as the Foresters would get charged with an attack error, which gave the Wolves a 24-23 lead.
After both teams would trade points back and forth, Stritch would close the match out as Petrack sent home the winning kill, sealing the 28-26 win.
Stritch would be led in kills during the match by Ahmad, who had 10, along with Wipperfurth and Pflibsen, who each added nine kills a piece.
With the wins, the Wolves went 2-0 on Friday during day one of the 2010 Wolves Weekend Invitational. The wins also helped improve the team’s overall record to 3-4 and gave them a three-match winning streak.
The team will return to action on Saturday as they'll face the University of St. Francis Cougars at 1:00 p.m. and the Davenport University Panthers at 4:30 p.m. during day two of the 2010 Wolves Weekend Invitational.
