Sarah Mlachnik recorded 33 digs in day two of the Mount Mercy College Invitational
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – On the second day of the Mount Mercy Invitational, the Cardinal Stritch University women’s volleyball team looked to bounce back from a disappointing first day. It wasn’t meant to be, however, as Stritch lost in three games to Ashford and took William Penn to five games before losing.
Stritch continued to get excellent play from Ashley Wipperfurth (Sauk City, Wis.), Kate Osowiec (Chicago, Ill.) and Sarah Mlachnik (Muskego, Wis.) on day two of the tournament. In the first game, Stritch lost to the Saints, 25-18. The Wolves committed 11 attack errors in the game one loss.
In game two, Stritch cleaned up the attack errors, one attack error, but that was not enough as the Wolves fell 25-23. Jessica Shaver (West Allis, Wis.) and Wipperfurth led the way for the Wolves with four kills. Osowiec posted nine assist in the second game.
The Wolves battled tough in game three but came up short, 27-25. Wipperfurth led the way for the Wolves recording 11 kills, Osowiec had 25 assist and Mlachnik posted 10 digs.
The Wolves continued to battle strong in the second match of the day against William Penn. In a back and forth match the Wolves would find themselves coming up short, as they lost the match 3-2. Three games were decided by three points or less.
Game one would go to Statesmen, 26-24. Stritch would even the match up at 1-1, with a 25-21 game two victory. Wipperfurth paced the Wolves with six kills and Osowiec had eight assist in the game two victory.
In the back and forth match, game three went to William Pen 25-19. Stritch stayed strong and came back and won game four, 31-29, tying the match at 2-2. Wipperfurth had 10 kills and Jacqui Zintak (Evergreen Park, Ill.) had 13 assist.
The fifth and final game of the match would not go the Wolves way, as the Statesmen held the Wolves to five kills in the game and won the game 15-12. With the victory the Statesmen sealed the match 3-2. Leading the Wolves in match two was Wipperfurth (23 kills), Zintak (24 assist) and Mlachnik (23 digs).
With the losses, the Wolves fall to 0-4 on the season. Stritch will look to get in the win column when they return to the court on September 1. Playing on the road against Mount Mary College, the Wolves will take to the court at 7:00 p.m.
