Orange City, Iowa – The Cardinal Stritch University Women’s Soccer team won a physical match with Northwestern College (Iowa) on Saturday afternoon. Freshman, Lourdes Gil (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Wolves to a 3-1 victory over the Red Raiders in the Northwestern Pizza Ranch Classic.
Northwestern College looked to be breaking onto the scoreboard first when Alli Dunkelberger (Waconia, Minn.) looked to put a header in but Wolves goalie, Heather McGlothlin (Bloomington, Ind.). After that the Wolves went down and scored on Lourdes Gil’s first goal of the afternoon.
The Wolves looked to be taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Red Raiders had a different thought. With 20 seconds left before halftime, Northwestern College tied the game. The Red Raiders goal came off a corner kick and Katie Fonte (Arvada, Colo.) put the goal in the back of the net.
Once the second half started Stritch took the game over. Less than three minutes into the second half. Gil took the pass from Rhesia Baron (Accrington, England) and scored her second goal of the game. Gil’s goal put the Wolves back on top 2-1.
Stritch added another goal in the 85th minute of the game, when Kaitlyn Lunangrath (West Bend, Wis.) scored on a pass by Britney Klump (Oak Creek, Wis.). The goal extended the Wolves lead to 3-1 over the Red Raiders.
Northwestern College had their fair share of opportunities to score. The Red Raiders outshot the Wolves 17 to 11, but McGlothlin was up for the challenge as she recorded seven saves on the afternoon.
Cardinal Stritch University returns to the field on Saturday September 4 when they take on Marian College (Ind.) in the Marian Classic. Kick-off is set for 1:00 P.M.
