Stritch Drops Opener; Wins Game Two

Plymouth, Wis. - Playing their fourth doubleheader in four days Cardinal Stritch University split a doubleheader with Lakeland College. Lakeland won the first game 5-2 and Stritch took the second game 9-7.

Game one the Wolves outhit the Muskie, eight to four, but could only manage two runs in the game. Both teams committed three errors in the game.

In the fourth inning Lakeland broke the scoreless tie. Lakeland scored five runs on three hits as Stritch committed one error in the inning as Lakeland pulled out to a 5-0 lead over Stritch.

Stritch started a came back in the top of the six inning. After a leadoff double by Katie Giuffre (Hamilton, Wis.), Brittany Rader (New Berlin, Wis.) bunted her over to third. Hillary Trebiatowski (Plover, Wis.) hit a two run home run to put the Wolves on the board and down 5-2. Stritch threatened to score more runs in the sixth inning. Kelly Gosselin (Batavia, Ill.) and Kayla Schlegel (New Berlin, Wis.) hit back to back singles and Jodi Kruszka (Oak Creek, Wis.) reached on an error to load the bases. They would be left on base after the next two Wolves were retired.

Stritch threatened to score in the top of the seventh. Giuffre singled to right and advanced to second on an error by the right fielder. Rader then came up and reached base on a single to the shortstop. They would be left on base to end the game and the Wolves lost 5-2. This dropped their record to 2-15 on the season.

Game two Stritch fell behind early. Lakeland scored a quick run in the bottom of the first inning. KC Blahnik (Gladstone, Mich.) doubled to start the inning and with one out she stole third base and scored on an error by Kruszka.

The Muskie’s added two more runs on a double by Sarah Roberts (Escanaba, Mich.) This extended Lakelands lead to 3-0.

The Wolves answered in a big way in the top of the fourth inning. After Gosselin singled to left Schlegel came up to bat and hit a home run to cut the lead of the Muskie’s to one run. Stephanie Douglas (Muskego, Wis.) followed the homerun with a single to center. Anna Flock (Norwalk, Wis.) reached on an error. Douglas was driven home by Kruszka to tie the game at three. The hits kept coming for Stritch in the top of the fourth. After all was said and done Stritch scored seven runs on seven hits to pull ahead of Lakeland 7-3.

Lakeland trimmed the lead of Stritch to 7-4 after Jessie Eichner (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) doubled to left field. She was driven home on a triple by Heather Haeflinger (Shawano, Wis.)

Stritch kept the offense going in the sixth inning. With Giuffre and Rader on base, the Wolves pulled a double steal to put both runners in scoring position. Giuffre scored on a ground out by Trebiatowski. Gosselin drove Rader home on single to left. That would be all the Wolves would get and extended their lead to 9-4.

Lakeland came back and scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. This cut the Wolves lead to 9-7. They would not get any more for the game.

Stritch improved their record to 3-15 with the 9-7 win over Lakeland. With the loss Lakeland College record dropped to 6-6 on the season.

The next game for Cardinal Stritch University comes on April 7, when they host Judson University at 3 PM for a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference game.
