Palos Heights, Ill. – Playing in their second doubleheader in two days, Cardinal Stritch University found a way to split with Trinity Christian College. Stritch won the first game, 5-4 and dropped the second game 8-0 in six innings.
Stritch fell behind early in game one. The Trolls of Trinity Christian found a way to score in the bottom of the first, off Stritch’s starter Anna Flock (Norwalk, Wis.). Flock would only surrender one run in the inning.
The Wolves battled back in the top of the second inning. Kayla Schlegel (New Berlin, Wis.) led off the inning with a double. Schlegel was driven in by a single by Hillary Trebiatowski (Plover, Wis.). This tied the game at 1-1. On Jodi Kruszka’s (Oak Creek, Wis.) ground out to the pitcher, Trebiatowski advanced to third base. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Flock to put the Wolves ahead 2-1.
Trinity Christian came back to tie the game up in the bottom of the third inning, on a RBI single by Nicole Stuczynski (Burbank, Ill.). The game was tied at 2-2 going to the fourth inning.
The tie did not last long, because in the top of the fourth, the Wolves found a way to get two runs across the plate. With runners on second and third, Flock drove one run in to put the Wolves back on top 3-2. The other run was driven in by Brooke Jancik (Batavia, Ill.) on a single. This put Stritch up 4-2.
The Trolls scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by freshman Syerra Niday (Corydon, Iowa). The other run scored on a wild pitch by Schlegel, who came out of the bullpen to relieve Flock. After five innings, the score was tied at 4-4.
Schlegel found a way to break the tie when she came up in the top of the sixth inning. With one out in the inning, Schlegel hit her third home run of the season. This would end up being the game winning hit, as Stritch would win 5-4. Schlegel picked up her first collegiate win.
In game two, Stritch lacked the offense that they had produced in game one. Sophomore Kelly Maloney, (Fresno, Calif.) only allowed three hits and walked two on her way to the victory.
Trinity Christian found a way to score three runs on three hits, leaving Stritch behind in the first inning. Stritch also committed three errors in the inning.
The Trolls added on to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Stritch committed two errors in the inning each led to the one run the Trolls scored. After the inning was complete the Trolls led 4-0.
Trinity Christian would score four more runs on the afternoon to win 8-0. Schlegel picked up a tough loss, by allowing four runs, zero runs were earned. With the split, Stritch record went to 4-20 overall and 2-6 in the CCAC, while Trinity Christian went to 10-23 and 5-7 in the CCAC.
Stritch returns home tomorrow to face Robert Morris College. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m. Stritch will also play home games next week on Wednesday April 21, 23 and 24.
