Milwaukee, Wis. – Cardinal Stritch University could not get the offense in gear against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Managing four runs in two games would not be enough as the Pointers swept Stritch in the Wolves home opener, 17-4 and 10-0.
In game one the Pointers got off to a fast start by batting all nine and scoring four runs on three hits and the Wolves committed one error. Stevens Point also left two runners on base.
After Stritch was retired in the bottom of the first the Pointers came up in the top of the second and scored two more runs. This extended their lead over the Wolves to 6-0.
The Wolves did not have an answer for the Pointers in the bottom of the second inning and went down in order. In the top of the third Stevens Point offense was capped off by a three run home run by second baseman Melissa Wenig (Oshkosh, Wis.). The Pointers put up eight runs on six hits to extend their lead to 14-0.
UW-Stevens Point extended their lead to 15-0 after scoring one run in the top of the fourth inning. Stritch finally had an answer for the Pointers in the bottom of the fourth. Kelly Gosselin (Batavia, Ill.) doubled home two runners to cut the lead to 15-2. Later on in the inning Gosselin was driven home on a double by Anna Flock (Norwalk, Wis.). Stephanie Douglas (Muskego, Wis.) followed with a RBI single. That was all the Wolves would get in the inning and they trailed 15-4 after four innings.
The Pointers tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 17-4. The Wolves had no answer in the bottom of the fifth and lost the game. The final score was 17-4.
In game two, the Wolves struggled at the plate. Stritch did not record a hit in the second game.
Stevens Point added a quick run in the top of the first inning to lead 1-0. Stevens Point did not look back. The pointers added three more runs in the second and six in the third to lead 10-0 after three.
Stritch could not get the offense in gear. The only runner to reach base for Stritch in the second game was Brittany Rader (New Berlin, Wis.) on a walk. The final score was 10-0.
With these two losses it drops the Wolves record to 2-14 on the season and UW-Stevens Point improves to 11-5.
The Wolves next game is Friday April 2 at Lakeland College. The game is scheduled to start at 3:30 PM. Stritch will return home on April 7 to take on Judson University with the game starting at 3 PM.
