The Wolves couldn't find a way to win in Indiana
New Albany, Ind. – The Cardinal Stritch University baseball team continued to struggle on Sunday, as they faced Indiana University Southeast and Indiana Tech. The Wolves are not having issues scoring runs. They are however, having trouble stopping them. Stritch used four hurlers in a 14-8 loss against IUSE, and gave up six free bases in the 7-4 loss to Indiana Tech.
In game one, pitcher, Justin Cooper (Watertown, Wis.), gave up five runs in the first inning, as IU Southeast took advantage of three Stritch errors. The Wolves responded in the top of the second, using singles from Jacob Lark (Germantown, Wis.), Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.), Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.), and Tyler Henkel (Rhinelander, Wis.), as well as a walk to Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.), to put three runs on the board.
The comeback was negated when the Grenadiers scored five more runs in the next two innings. Stritch, down 10-3, was able to put two more runs on the board in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh. But IU Southeast responded to each of the Wolves efforts and earned a 14-8 win.
Cooper gets the loss for Stritch and falls to 2-0 on the season. The junior gave up ten hits and ten runs in three innings of work.
Henkel led the Wolves offense with three hits and three RBI, while Trewyn added two hits and earned an RBI.
Cameron Conner (Frankfort, Ky.) recorded three hits and three runs scored for the Grenadiers and Jordan Pass (Louisville, Ky.) contributed two hits and three runs scored. Zach Maupin (Mt. Washington, Ky.) led IU Southeast with three RBI.
Stritch got off to a much better start in the second game of the day against Indiana Tech. Andy Klein (Cudahy, Wis.) was able to hold the Warriors scoreless until the third inning when they put two across the plate. A single by Dean Mlachnik (Muskego, Wis.) brought in both Lark and Henkel to tie it up 2-2 for the Wolves.
After two quick outs in the next inning, however, Klein hit two consecutive batters. The loss of control really hurt the Wolves, who gave up three runs in the inning to go down 5-2.
In an attempt to recover, James, Henkel, Lark, and Mlachnik teamed up to bring in two runs for the Wolves in the fifth. But Stritch couldn’t find a way to score again, and fell to the Warriors, 7-4.
The loss goes to Klein, who gave up eight hits and five runs in five innings of work.
Henkel had three hits against Indiana Tech, while James, Lark and Mlachnik each recorded two. Mlachnik earned all four of the Wolves RBI.
The Wolves will travel to Texas for their next games. They are slated to take on DeSales University on Mar. 13.
