Daum brings it down
Birthday girl, Brittney Daum, put up 18 points against the Lions
Milwaukee, Wis. – It was another big win for the Cardinal Stritch University women’s basketball team at home, as they dominated against Finlandia University. Stritch was led by seniors Michelle Stelloh (West Allis, Wis.) and Brittney Daum (Gilberts, Ill.) in the 94-47 victory that extends the Wolves winning streak to 12.

Stritch controlled the entire first period, as the Lions failed to score until eight minutes into the game. Plagued by turnovers, Finlandia couldn’t get any offense going, while the Wolves rallied, feeding off of multiple three-pointers by Daum in the opening minutes. Strong defense and consistent shooting gave Stritch a 47-15 lead at half time.

The Lions picked up their offensive game in the second half, led by Jodi Riutta (Houghton, Mich.) and Jasmine Byers (Detroit, Mich.), but it wasn’t enough to combat the Wolves. Stritch reserves saw extended playing time and took advantage of the opportunity. Sarah Potochich (New Berlin, Wis.) netted five points off the bench, while Lisa Lawrence (Naperville, Ill.) pulled down six rebounds and recorded five points. It was Stelloh that did the most damage in the second period, adding 14 points in only nine minutes. Even with the Lions’ extra energy there was no coming back, and the Wolves closed the game up 94-47.

Riutta and Tyeshia Howard (Detroit, Mich.) led Finlandia’s offense, earning 15 and 14 points respectively. Ally Tincknell (Negaunee, Mich.) picked up a game-high ten rebounds in the losing effort.
The Wolves were once again led by the trio of Stelloh, Daum, and Liz Neitzel (Lomira, Wis.), who netted 22, 18, and 13 points, respectively. Lawrence led the Wolves with six rebounds, while Renet Skorusa (Lemont, Ill.) added five. Point guard Beth Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis.) dished out a game-high five assists.

With the win the Wolves improve to 23-2 overall and remain at 7-0 in the CCAC. They will travel to Deerfield, Ill. on Wednesday, Feb. 10, to face conference foe Trinity International.

Athletes of the Month
Jocelyn Ritger
Women's Cross Country
Women's cross country runner Jocelyn Ritger (Wesst Bend, Wis.) becomes one of two athletes at Stritch to be named Athlete of the Month for the first time ever in school history.

Ritger, a junior at Stritch, has been pacing the way all season long for the Wolves women's cross country team.  The team's leading top finisher in all seven of the team's meets, Ritger placed as high as fifth overall in the Falcon Invite on Sept. 19 and sixth in the Wisconsin Private College Championship (WPCC) on Oct. 17.

The Wolves' leading runner closed out the season on a high note as she recorded a season-best time of 24:27  in the 6K during the WPCC.  She also would finish in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) meet in 12th place with a finishing time of 20:33, barely missing a chance to qualify for nationals.
Andy Collins
Men's Soccer

Senior men's soccer player Andy Collins (Burnley, England)  becomes one of two athletes at Stritch to be named Athlete of the Month for the first time ever in school history.

Collins had a stellar final season for the Wolves to earn Athlete of the Month for November.  The Stritch midfielder was first on the team with a career-high eight goals and second on the team with 17 overall points as the Wolves finished the season at 12-6-1 overall and 7-3 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC).  Collins was also first for Stritch with four game-winning goals in the 2009 season.

Capping off a strong final season, the senior co-captain finished the year by being named to the CCAC All-Conference team as honorable mention.  For Collins, it is the second time in his career that he's earned this distinction.

Which of these sports should Cardinal Stritch University consider adding?

Nicknames
Cardinal Stritch University Athletics has had three nicknames since its inception.  In 1971, Stritch was known as the Red Devils as voted on by the student body.  In 1982, that name was changed to the Crusaders.  Stritch would go by the Crusaders nickname until 2001.  During 2001, Stritch officially became known as the Wolves, which is the current mascot of Cardinal Stritch University Athletics.
