Adrian, Mich. – Playing in the Siena Heights University triangular, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves men’s volleyball team tallied two three-game sweeps on the day. The Wolves claimed wins against the College of Mount St. Joseph and the host, Siena Heights.
In their first match of the day, Stritch faced the College of Mount St. Joseph defeating them in straight sets by scores of 30-16, 30-15, and 30-9.
The Wolves got strong efforts from Fernando Bernal (Miami, Fla.), George Ghassan (Naperville, Ill.) and Alo Tauaese (Pomona, Calif.). Bernal, a senior, led Stritch with 10 kills on 13 attempts while Ghassan sent home eight on 13 attempts.
Tauaese, a freshman setter, helped pace the offensive sets with 32 assists.
Stritch returned to the court for its second match of the day, taking on the host Siena Heights University. The Wolves would again claim the set in three games as they defeated the Saints by scores of 30-18, 30-24, and 30-26.
The Wolves placed more of their traditional lineup in the mix against the Saints and saw strong results from Scott Golden (Vernon Hills, Ill.), Austin Cass (Madison, Wis.), and Garrett Payne (San Diego, Calif.).
Golden is having a strong season for the Wolves and continued do so by notching 13 kills on 17 attempts. Cass, who is slowly returning to the lineup after an injury that kept him out for a few weeks, came up with 12 kills on 18 attempts.
The Wolves’ usual setter, Garrett Payne, got back to work by setting the Stritch attackers up with 39 assists in the match.
With the two wins on Friday night, the Wolves improve their overall record to 12-5. The match against the Saints counts towards their MAMVIC East record as that now improves to 6-2. Stritch will take to the nets again on Saturday as they face both teams again with their first match of the day starting at 2 p.m. against the College of Mount St. Joseph.
