Chicago, Ill. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves men’s volleyball team played a solid match Tuesday night, defeating the Moody Bible Institute Archers in three straight games by scores of 30-9, 30-20, and 30-19.
The Wolves, who suffered a tough loss in their last match against Lindenwood University, rebounded against the Archers, coming to play right away in game one. Senior Matt Tauese (Pomona, Calif.) had a stellar first game for Stritch by registering seven kills in the opening game while senior Fernando Bernal (Miami, Fla.) added four kills in the opening win.
Stritch continued their strong play in game two of the match, claiming the game 30-20. This time, the Wolves received noteworthy offensive performances from Dan Vick (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Brendan McDevitt (Chicago, Ill.) as the pair combined to register 13 kills in the win. Freshman Alo Tauaese (Pomona, Calif.) was busy setting the Wolves’ offense up during the second game as Tauaese was credited with 20 assists.
Looking to claim the sweep and round out the win, the Wolves went to work. This time it was McDevitt and Scott Golden (Vernon Hills, Ill.) who would lead Stritch. McDevitt had six kills for the second straight game while Golden smashed out five kills during the game.
McDevitt would lead Stritch in kills during the match with 15 on the night while the younger Tauaese would finish with 41 assists. Defensively, Chris Arquilla (Willow Springs, Ill.) and Austin Cass (Madison, Wis.) were strong against the Archers as the pair recorded 17 digs.
With the win over the Archers, the Wolves improve their overall record to 10-5 and improve their Mid-America Men’s Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) East record to 5-2 on the year. The Archers fall to 0-12 overall and to 0-6.
The Stritch Wolves will take to the court again this upcoming weekend as they’ll travel to Adrian, Mich. to compete in the Siena Heights University Triangular on Feb.26-27. The Wolves will play their first match on Friday at 6 p.m. against College of Mount St. Joseph at 6 p.m. and then will follow things up with an 8 p.m. match against host Siena Heights.
