Box Score

Milwaukee, Wis. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves men’s volleyball team got the 2010 season off on the right foot in Wednesday night’s season opener. Facing the Moody Bible Institute Archers, Stritch swept the Archers, 3-0, by scores of 30-13, 30-15, and 30-14.

In the first game of the match, the Wolves rode the strong opening serving of Scott Golden (Vernon Hills, Ill.) to a quick 6-0 lead with two service aces by Golden and kills by Vladimir Frenc (Belgrade, Serbia) and Austin Cass (Madison, Wis.). After trading three points apiece in the next couple of plays, the Wolves extended their lead to 11-3.

After another kill by Cass to make the score 12-3, The Archers would come back for four more points to cut the deficit to 12-7, but that would be the closest they would get as the Wolves would claim the game 30-13. In the game, Frenc would lead all players with seven kills while Garret Payne (San Diego, Calif.) would add 16 assists.

In game two, Stritch came out firing again, racing out to another quick lead this time at 8-2. During the opening run, senior Matt Tauaese (Ponoma, Calif.) would register three kills while George Ghassan (Naperville, Ill.) would add two.

The Wolves would eventually lay claim to the 30-15 win as Tauaese would finish with five kills. Ghassan would close the game with four kills on five attempts.

The Archers, who would commit 21 attack errors in the match, couldn’t respond in the third game as the Wolves would cruise to a 30-14 win. Fernando Bernal (Miami, Fla.) would add five kills in the final game of the match. Meanwhile freshman Adam Cosson (West Allis, Wis.) would contribute to the win with three digs.

In the three-game set, the Wolves would be led in kills by Tauaese and Bernal, who each claimed eight kills. Meanwhile, Frenc would add seven kills while Cass and Golden would end the night with six apiece.

With the win, the third ranked Wolves open the season at 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Mid-America Men’s Volleyball Conference (MAMVIC) East. The loss drops the Archers to 1-1 on the season and to 0-1 in the conference.

Next up, Stritch will hit the road to St. Charles, Mo. to play in the Lindenwood University Invitational on Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30. The Wolves will play matches against Missouri Baptist University and Warner University on Friday and will return to action on Saturday to face Warner University again, and then wrap things up against Park University.

Athletes of the Month
Andy Collins
Men's Soccer

Senior men's soccer player Andy Collins (Burnley, England)  becomes one of two athletes at Stritch to be named Athlete of the Month for the first time ever in school history.

Collins had a stellar final season for the Wolves to earn Athlete of the Month for November.  The Stritch midfielder was first on the team with a career-high eight goals and second on the team with 17 overall points as the Wolves finished the season at 12-6-1 overall and 7-3 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC).  Collins was also first for Stritch with four game-winning goals in the 2009 season.

Capping off a strong final season, the senior co-captain finished the year by being named to the CCAC All-Conference team as honorable mention.  For Collins, it is the second time in his career that he's earned this distinction.

Jocelyn Ritger
Women's Cross Country
Women's cross country runner Jocelyn Ritger (Wesst Bend, Wis.) becomes one of two athletes at Stritch to be named Athlete of the Month for the first time ever in school history.

Ritger, a junior at Stritch, has been pacing the way all season long for the Wolves women's cross country team.  The team's leading top finisher in all seven of the team's meets, Ritger placed as high as fifth overall in the Falcon Invite on Sept. 19 and sixth in the Wisconsin Private College Championship (WPCC) on Oct. 17.

The Wolves' leading runner closed out the season on a high note as she recorded a season-best time of 24:27  in the 6K during the WPCC.  She also would finish in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) meet in 12th place with a finishing time of 20:33, barely missing a chance to qualify for nationals.
Which of these sports should Cardinal Stritch University consider adding?

Nicknames
Cardinal Stritch University Athletics has had three nicknames since its inception.  In 1971, Stritch was known as the Red Devils as voted on by the student body.  In 1982, that name was changed to the Crusaders.  Stritch would go by the Crusaders nickname until 2001.  During 2001, Stritch officially became known as the Wolves, which is the current mascot of Cardinal Stritch University Athletics.
